Scott Kazmir received an early birthday present.

The Rays on Friday avoided salary arbitration with the lefthander by signing their staff ace to a one-year, $3.7 million contract extension.

Kazmir, who turns 24 on Thursday, went 13-9 with a 3.48 ERA last season and led the American League with 239 strikeouts.
