The Marlins are in discussions with veteran left fielder Luis Gonzalez about potentially joining the team, his agent said Thursday.

Gonzalez, 40, would provide a solid veteran backup to left fielder Josh Willingham and first baseman Mike Jacobs, and could step in if either player is injured. Willingham missed time with a back injury late last season, but his agent, Matt Sosnick, said Thursday that Willingham's back is fine.

''There has been some significant dialogue,'' said Gonzalez's agent, Gregg Clifton. ``He's very interested and it's reciprocal. He's got a lot left in the tank. He's a Florida guy.''
