Practically since the moment Torii Hunter first pulled on an Angels' jersey, Bill Smith has been trying to trade for Hunter's replacement in center field. That's no secret. But this is: Smith might have accomplished the task, on the very same day. While Hunter charmed the California media Nov. 28, pledging $90 million worth of loyalty to his new team, Smith, the Twins' rookie General Manager, was pulling off his first trade. The headline acquisition was Delmon Young, whom the Twins project as a future all-star. But the package from Tampa Bay included another member of the Rays' deep pool of outfielding talent: Jason Pridie. Smith's search for a center fielder, primarily in a trade involving Johan Santana, continues. But a strong 2007 season, in which Pridie (pronounced PRY-dee) moved from Class AA to Class AAA and seemed to become more comfortable with the mechanics of his left-handed swing, gives the Twins hope that they already have a plausible replacement for Hunter on the roster. "Absolutely, it's possible," that Pridie will step into Hunter's Gold Glove kingdom, Smith said. "We're going to get a close look at him this spring. It's up to him."
