Yankees Set Monday Deadline For Johan
3rd December, 2007 - 12:12 am
Newsday - By the end of Monday, Johan Santana will either be the newest New York Yankee or senior vice president Hank Steinbrenner will remove his team from trade discussions with the Minnesota Twins.

"The Twins are aware of it, that I'm not going to wait much longer. And the truth of the matter is, they don't want to be stuck with only one team to deal with," Steinbrenner said Sunday. "If they're stuck with just Boston, they're going to get a lot less. I'm not going to be played. This is not a game. This is serious business. I'm not going to be played, us against the Red Sox. That's not going to happen."

The Yankees are reportedly offering Phil Hughes, Melky Cabrera and a lesser prospect.

Steinbrenner denied reports that the Yankees and Twins could not agree on the third player in the deal.

"I think our offer is the best offer," Steinbrenner said. "We have the best young pitchers in the game, even better than Boston."

When asked about Boston's bid, Steinbrenner said, "I don't really care what the Red Sox offer, to tell you the truth. The way I do things is, I make a strong offer, take it or leave it." [READ]
