| 15th November, 2007 - 1:03 pm | MLB.com - According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, Jake Peavy's agent Barry Axelrod, and team CEO Sandy Alderson have confirmed discussions between the two sides to keep the 26-year-old right-hander in San Diego after his current deal expires.
Peavy, who won 19 games last season and led the league in victories, strikeouts and ERA, is under contract through 2009.
In August, the day after Cubs' pitcher Carlos Zambrano signed a five-year extension for $91.5 million, Peavy expressed skepticism that he would remain a Padre beyond 2009.
"I'm not optimistic about staying here as much as I'd like to remain a Padre," Peavy told the Union-Tribune. "I hope it's not the case, but I think it's inevitable that I'll wind up somewhere else. I am not looking to break the bank. I'm not saying I want a huge payday. I'm going to ask for what's fair. And although I hope it happens here, I just don't see the Padres spending that much on a player." [READ] |
