John Allen, who ran the Cincinnati Reds after former owner Marge Schott was suspended in the 1990s, resigned Tuesday as the team's chief operating officer.

Allen had been in charge of the team's business operations the last two seasons under owner Bob Castellini. His legacy will be how he guided baseball's first professional franchise through one of its darkest times.

Allen joined the Reds as controller in 1995 and became managing executive a year later, when Schott was suspended by Major League Baseball. Allen immediately took the team in a different direction, adding fan promotions and other activities that Schott ended when she took ownership.
