The Tigers stepped up negotiations with Todd Jones on Monday in hopes of signing him before Tuesday, when the free-agent reliever would be eligible to sign with another team.

The need to re-sign Jones became even greater when Joel Zumaya had shoulder surgery that will cost him at least the first two months of the 2008 season.
