As trade talks began to percolate at the general managers' meetings, the Rockies' focus shifted Tuesday to contracts.

Colorado has made two-year offers to second baseman Kazuo Matsui and catcher Yorvit Torrealba and settled on the multi-year proposal it will make to all-star outfielder Matt Holliday.

Holliday won't be eligible for free agency until after the 2009 season. The team has said it can afford to go year-to-year in salary arbitration (that will cost $9 million this winter) but would like to lock up him long term. It's believed that they will make the National League MVP candidate a four-year offer. Based on discussions with opposing executives, they figured any deal would have to average $15 million annually.

"We aren't driving that bus," Rockies' owner Dick Monfort said Tuesday. "Right now his agent (Scott Boras) has bigger fish to fry with (Alex Rodriguez). We will do something probably closer to the new year."
