Before Tuesday's rainout, Tigers manager Alan Trammell had written out a lineup that had Carlos Pena, a left-handed hitter, in the starting lineup against Indians left-hander Cliff Lee. With Lee starting Wednesday, Trammell used the same lineup, including Pena, who entered the game hitting .107 off left-handers. "Even though he hasn't hit that well against left-handers, we want to get him some playing time," Trammell said. "He's opened some eyes -- what he's done hasn't been ordinary." Pena was 1-for-4 in Wednesday's 4-3 victory. He was 0-for-3 against Lee, but doubled in a run in the eighth off left-hander Scott Sauerbeck to improve to .125 against lefties. Pena is hitting .452 (14-for-31) with seven home runs and 16 RBIs since being recalled from Triple-A Toledo on Aug. 17. Trammell said his objective for the rest of the season with Pena is to determine "does he fit in next year?" "We're going to have to make a decision on Carlos," Trammell said. "I give him credit for what he's done so far. But is two weeks enough for the organization to make a determination? No. He's had a nice start -- can he build on it? Up to now, he's been a force. "He could make our decision easy -- one way or another."
