The Yankees must decide whether to exercise Bobby Abreu's $16 million option, and a club source indicated that the team is leaning toward picking it up.

That would solidify the Yanks' outfield for next season with Abreu in right field, Melky Cabrera in center and Hideki Matsui and Johnny Damon sharing duties in left.

General manager Brian Cashman said yesterday that nothing had been finalized, as he wanted to speak with the Steinbrenners one more time before making a decision.

Should the Yankees decline the option, they would owe Abreu a $2 million buyout. If Abreu is sent packing, the Yankees could move Cabrera to right field and use Damon in center or go after a free agent center fielder such as Torii Hunter or Aaron Rowand.
