All-Star closer Billy Wagner was asked for an update on contract negotiations on Friday and offered nothing of substance. After being repeatedly chastised by the Phillies for speaking out, Wagner?s plan is to stop being so outspoken and quietly hope a deal is finalized by the end of the season, his new deadline to give up free agency. Although negotiations are ongoing and both sides apparently want this two-year relationship to continue, a deal isn?t close to being completed, a team source said on Friday. The sides appear to be about $6 million-to-8 million apart on a three-year deal worth somewhere in the $24 million-to-$27 million range. Wagner also apparently still is demanding that all three seasons be guaranteed while the Phils want the final year to be a vesting option. Also, Wagner is asking for a full no-trade clause and the Phillies apparently only will accept a limited clause. ?I know Bean and the Phillies are talking, but that?s all I know,? Wagner said. ?If we get close, I?m sure I?ll find out. Right now, I?m only worried about doing my job.?
