Joe Torre always has been portrayed as a manager ideal for veteran players, but he's also adept at reaching the young Yankees, according to one of the team's up-and-coming stars.

Phil Hughes, the Yanks' talented 21-year-old starter, said Torre was, "Nothing but great to me. All the players respect him a great deal. ... I love Joe to death."

Torre is tight with longtime Yankee stars such as Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera, and he seemed to forge a bond with rookies, too.

When the Yanks clinched a playoff spot in September, a group of young players: Hughes, Joba Chamberlain, Ian Kennedy, Melky Cabrera and others - circled around Torre during the clubhouse celebration, pouring champagne over his head and chanting "Energy!" - a Torre catch phrase for the younger players.
