The Philadelphia Phillies told manager Charlie Manuel in the final week of the regular season that it would like him to return in 2008.

"They basically told me that I did a good job and they wanted me back," Manuel said last night before Game 3 of the National League division series against Colorado at Coors Field. "I told them I would talk to them at the end of the year. I told them that right now I was focused on winning games."

But Manuel isn't counting on anything just yet.

"We haven't set anything yet," Manuel said.

"If I'm sitting here and you tell me, 'Chuck, you've got a million . . . dollars or something if you go pick it up.' Until it's in my hand, no," Manuel said. "That's kind of how I look at life. So we'll see."
