The conventional wisdom around baseball is if the Yankees repeat their nightmare 2006 playoff performance with a first-round exit, manager Joe Torre's job will be in serious peril. And some insiders believe Torre may actually need to reach the World Series to ensure a contract extension with the club he has managed to four championships since taking over in 1996.

Yankees decisionmakers aren't talking publicly about Torre's status, except to say that they aren't even talking privately about this matter, either. While the general belief around baseball is the Yankees will have to show something this October for Torre to keep his job, that's not a certainty. Beyond his Hall-of-Fame managing credentials, Torre has proven through 12 consecutive seasons in the Bronx to be a champion survivor.

"Joe's situation, along with everyone else's, will be discussed at the end of the season,'' general manager Brian Cashman said by phone before the Yankees lost Game 1 of the Division Series in Cleveland, 12-3, on Thursday. "We hope that's in November. Once the season's over, we'll sit down. We've had a long year. Hopefully, it goes a little longer... We do the best job we can possibly do, and when the dust settles, we get judged on the results.''
