Jon Lester, who overcame a bout with cancer to make it back to the major leagues, was optioned to the minors on Thursday by the Red Sox.

Lester's demotion to Class AA Portland comes two days after he beat the Devil Rays.

Lester, who was diagnosed with anaplastic large cell lymphoma last September, had a steady road back following treatment in the offseason.
