Jose Contreras of the White Sox, Dontrelle Willis of the Marlins and Matt Morris of the Giants may be available. All play on fourth- or fifth-place teams that seem to be going nowhere and might welcome a deal to get out from under hefty financial obligations.

Mariners general manager Bill Bavasi has generally preferred to go after players who might be around for more than a couple of months. Contreras and Willis fit the bill in a big way, not being free agent-eligible until after the 2009 season. Morris is under contract through 2008.

"I'd like to see us add a starting pitcher," one Mariners insider said. "We're pretty solid everywhere else."
