Industry sources say that Johan Santana's agent, Peter Greenberg, has floated a $25-million-a-year pricetag in informal discussions with the Twins, at which the club has balked. Indeed, for a club with a $75 million payroll, logic says the Twins won't be able to afford him. The X-factor, according to Twins insiders, is owner Carl Pohlad. Never a big spender, Pohlad apparently is worried about appearances after finally getting an OK for a new stadium in Minneapolis (scheduled to open in 2010) and fears a public backlash if he doesn't re-sign Santana. |
