The Phillies initiated talks with Billy Wagner and his agent before the deadline about a contract extension, but the sides are not close to a deal. Wagner said yesterday that the Phillies have until the end of the month to make a deal or he will finish the season with the intent of testing the free-agent market. "The door is open, but it doesn't seem to be anything real serious," Wagner said before last night's game against the Chicago Cubs at Citizens Bank Park. "I think [Phillies general manager Ed Wade] understands that if I play this whole season out, I'm not going to sit there and turn free agency down. That would be stupid on my part. "It's pretty far apart. Not to get into numbers or anything like that, but there's a lot of movement that needs to be made. He's got a month before I make my decision to become a free agent. It would be unfair to me to play the whole season out just to see if they're even going to make an offer."
