David Ortiz was happy to cede his position on the players' All-Star ballot to Kevin Youkilis. After all, Ortiz has already nearly locked up the starting first base spot for the American League, boasting nearly twice as many votes as Justin Morneau, who is running second in the fan voting. "[He's] having a good year, man," Ortiz said of Youkilis. "I think being at the All-Star Game is going to be a really good experience for him. And man, you never know how close you can get to go to the All-Star Game. "If I can do anything for my teammates, I will." Ortiz is listed on both the fans' and players' ballots at first base because this year's All-Star Game will be played in San Francisco, a National League city, meaning there will be no designated hitter. "My first time, it would be an unbelievable honor, definitely something I would love to happen," Youkilis said of making the team. "It's an added bonus to this year being such a great year. "From the get-go, [Ortiz] was always hesitant about it. He didn't like that he was put at first base for the All-Star voting. It shows how David can be a great teammate, can show compassion for other guys, can try to help out, because he's been there, he's done that. He's trying to do a good thing, and I appreciate it." |
