Arizona manager Bob Melvin said he wanted to "crawl into a hole" when he pitched to Barry Bonds with first base open and Bonds hit a two-run homer, the 742nd of his career.

Scott Hairston bailed his manager out. Hairston hit a three-run pinch-hit homer to lead the D-Backs to a 5-4 victory over the Giants on Saturday night.

Hairston hit reliever Vinnie Chulk's first pitch 418 feet into the left-field seats with two runners on to give the D-Backs a 5-4 lead in the seventh inning.

It was the 14th homer of Hairston career, leaving him just 728 shy of Bonds. Hairston homered for the first time since 2004.
