Ryan Howard spent part of Tuesday's off-day making an appearance on CBS' Late Show with David Letterman, where he discussed family and baseball with the venerable television host.

"How's the season going so far?" Letterman asked.

"Oh, it's slow right now," Howard said of the team's 1-6 start. "But, you know, we're going to get it right."

Howard is one of the players struggling for the Phillies -- he's currently hitting .222 -- though he hit his first homer of the season in Monday's 11-5 loss to the Mets.

He conceded that slow starts are common.

"My mom's always said I've never done good in April," he said.
