Bud Selig gave credit to Ken Griffey, Jr. on Monday for the idea of honoring Jackie Robinson by wearing the No. 42.

"He called me at home on a Sunday night," Selig said. "I was coming from Phoenix. It was late, so I didn't call him back.

"The next morning by the time I got to the office he was already on the phone. We had a great conversation. It says a lot about him."

Griffey's call led to players all over baseball wearing Robinson's No. 42 this Sunday.

"I had a lot of respect for (Griffey) before," Selig said. "I have more now. It shows he not only knows baseball history but the importance of Jackie Robinson."
