Oliver died Saturday of complications following lung surgery, the Wheelan Funeral Home said. He was remembered at funeral services Wednesday for his humor and commitment to the Quad Cities. A star youth athlete in Moline, Oliver went on to Northwestern University on a football scholarship. Baseball was his first love, however, and he made the switch in 1956. He landed a minor league deal with the Cardinals organization, where he spent three years. |
