Longtime Phillies coach John Vukovich is in grave condition in a Philadelphia-area hospital due to complications caused by an inoperable brain tumor, the team said Wednesday.

The 59-year-old Vukovich, who was also a former manager with Philadelphia and the Cubs, spent the last 19 years with the Phillies. "I couldn't sleep (Wednesday) night," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said upon hearing of Vukovich's condition. "I just kept thinking about that. I've known Vuk a long time. I have a lot of respect for him."
