Adding depth to their catching corps and a right-handed bat with power, the Padres have signed veteran Todd Greene to a Minor League deal with an invitation to Spring Training.

An 11-year Major League veteran with six teams, Greene will serve as protection in support of Josh Bard and Rob Bowen, whose roles have expanded with Mike Piazza moving to Oakland. Greene can also play first base.

Bard and Bowen will go into camp as the No. 1 and No. 2 catchers, respectively. Greene, 35, will try to earn a job with his experience and versatility.
