The Pirates made their initial contract offer to free-agent starter Brian Lawrence late Monday, hours after members of their staff watched him pitch in a workout attended by several other teams.

Terms are not known, though it is believed to be a major-league contract. Lawrence, a 30-year-old right-hander, missed all of last season to shoulder surgery.
