Theo Epstein added one reliever (righty Brendan Donnelly) in a trade with the Angels for Minor League lefty Phil Seibel and another via free agency (left-hander J.C. Romero). And the Sox have also brought back catcher Doug Mirabelli to serve as Jason Varitek's backup, a role he has served for much of the last six years. Mirabelli, originally acquired by the Sox in June 2001, was dealt to San Diego last December for Mark Loretta. However, he was reacquired from the Padres on May 1, 2006, making a dramatic re-entry in time for a game with the Yankees and helping Tim Wakefield earn a victory that night. Mirabelli's strong suit is his ability to catch Wakefield's knuckleball. |
