The Detroit Tigers "briefly discussed" a contract extension beyond the 2015 season with Rick Porcello before he was traded to the Boston Red Sox on Thursday, according to the pitcher's agent.

Jim Murray, Porcello's agent, said the trade wasn't a result of unsuccessful contract extension talks.

"Rick thoroughly enjoyed being a part of such a classy organization and I can assure you that he was not traded based on anything to do with contract talks," Murray said.
