Dustin Pedroia is dealing with soreness in his left hand and wrist that could shut him down for the rest of the season.

John Farrell said Tuesday that the Boston Red Sox second baseman has been playing through the injury for most of the season.

An MRI showed further inflammation in the area, prompting the decision to shut Pedroia down for the time being.

"He's been getting treatment on it for some time now and as it's probably worsened some; felt like he needs to give this a little bit of a break," Farrell said. "There's further information being gathered. Right now, he's not in the lineup tonight."

Farrell was unsure whether Pedroia would be shut down for the year or if the injury would require surgery.
