Matt Wieters will have surgery on his right elbow and miss the remainder of the season.

"We were hoping to get real lucky today, but I think we all knew where it was headed," Buck Showalter said. "It really wasn't making a whole lot of progress."

Wieters had his ailing elbow examined Monday by Dr. James Andrews and will have Tommy John surgery. The Orioles are hoping he'll be ready by Opening Day 2015.

The catcher, who hasn't played since May 10, finishes the season with a slash line of .308/.339/.500.
