The Minnesota Twins traded with the New York Yankees for Eduardo Nunez on Monday in hopes of boosting their infield offense.

Nunez, 26, has 270 major league games under his belt and has proved to be a good hitter, but his defense is sometimes lacking.

The Twins have Pedro Florimon at shortstop, who is much better defensively than at the plate.

"I love Florimon; I'll tell you that right now," Ron Gardenhire said. "I love watching him play. He's as good a shortstop as there is out there. But we've got to have offense. He's got to put the ball in play more.

"If we get somebody that we think can help us and do a little bit better job offensively, it could happen."

Florimon, 27, has a .214 career batting average.

"We need him to hit .240, .250. It can't be .200, .210, whatever," Gardenhire said. "We need more than that. The way he can pick it, it's a wonderful thing to have those two out there. But we're not in that area where we can leave a guy out there who just doesn't hit at all."
