The New York Daily News already has anointed Lou Piniella the next manager of the Yankees. But it's not impossible he could be the next manager of the Giants. "I've had just a small preliminary discussion with the Giants," Piniella advised Monday.

Piniella will be providing commentary for the Fox telecast of the ALCS between the A's and Tigers. He was standing behind the batting cage at McAfee Coliseum, an interviewer who, not surprisingly given the speculation, had become an interviewee.

What about the Giants, who, at this moment unlike the Yankees do need a manager?

"The Giants, uh, they're a good ballclub," Piniella said.

"It's a great city, obviously," Piniella said when asked what appeals to him with the Giants, who recently parted ways with Felipe Alou as manager.
