Nobody has told Gary Sheffield if he will be back in pinstripes next season, but his gut tells him he won't. "My gut tells me I am not coming back," Sheffield told The Post yesterday. The Yankees have a $13 million option they have to exercise by the first week of next month. With Bobby Abreu entrenched in right field for a guaranteed $17.5 million next year, there is no room for Sheffield, who turns 38 on Nov. 18. The Yankees could pick up the option and trade Sheffield in order to keep him away from the Red Sox - or the Mets. Or they could not pick it up and offer him a reduced pact that he likely wouldn't accept. Asked how he felt about not coming back, Sheffield said, "It's all good." |
