Over the course of the summer, both Vernon Wells and the Blue Jays have played a game of being apathetic to extending the relationship beyond the 2007 season, but now Wells has made it clear that he wants to remain in Toronto. "I hope to be here next year and for a long time to come," Wells said last night in a lengthy conversation. "I've had a great five years here and hopefully I'll have more. I've had a great time and I hope that translates into how I play on the field. "Right now it's a matter of both sides are going to talk and see what they can come up with." Paul Godfrey couldn't be more clear; he doesn't want Wells wearing any other uniform. When asked on a scale of 1-to-10 the priority of settling Wells' contract status in the off-season, the Blue Jays president said: "It's a 10. "We've got to get Vernon's name on a contact. Look, he's a gold glover, a clutch hitter, our No. 3 guy in the lineup, he has been here for five years and he has got great fan support, great management support, what more can you say? "He has done everything we've asked him to do and done it in a quiet, efficient way. We've told him that we want him here and we would like to see him here."
