Joe Crede was out of the starting lineup with lower back pain for the third straight game on Saturday and said the injury may require offseason surgery.

The third baseman said he would like to avoid having surgery when the season ends, but has been told it would be a minor procedure that would not require an overnight stay.

"I never want to have surgery on anything, especially in the back area," Crede said. "But they sound pretty confident that it's a small surgery, that it won't have any long term effects. They say it will make you feel better, but there's also other stuff that could go wrong with it, too. ... It's something I obviously want to avoid but if it comes to it, it comes to it."
