Giants general manager Brian Sabean said it "would be a reach" for him to consider trading Jason Schmidt, who has been a subject of trade rumors. Sabean said he wasn't in discussions to trade anybody "who is considered a premium player" on the roster. "Now that could change obviously with our play, it could change with somebody that would be a free agent, but I don't consider Jason a free agent," Sabean said. "He has an option that we control." The Giants can bring back Schmidt for $10.5 million next year or buy out the option for $3.5 million. Sabean said exercising the option remains a viable move. Schmidt extended his streak to 17 consecutive scoreless innings and counting after a solid outing Wednesday night against Arizona. He struck out 10 in eight innings, the first time he has registered double-digit strikeouts since Aug. 12 of last season.
