The Angels, along with several other clubs, looked into reports that star Cuban second baseman Yuliesky Gourriel had defected while the Cuban national team was playing in Colombia, but the report proved false. The Angels were curious if Gourriel might seek political asylum, but they did a background check on him and were told he is likely to remain in Cuba. "When we signed Kendry (Morales), I asked him about Gourriel. We had him as their second-best player," Angels scouting director Eddie Bane said. "He said, 'Oh no, he's a communist.' He's a good player, but we'll never see him." |
