Baseball Set To Lose $500M To Injuries, Replacement Costs

Aug 11, 2012 10:01 AM EST

Major League Baseball is on pace to lose $500 million in salaries and replacement costs to the disabled list this season.

The total represents a new record.

There are 52 starting pitchers and 62 relievers currently on the disabled list.

"And what have pitch counts done?" one trainer asked. "What is the reason you do pitch counts? To protect the pitcher's arm. The DL will tell you it has not protected the pitcher's arm."
