Lance Niekro, the Giants' starting first baseman on opening day, was optioned to Triple-A Fresno on Sunday before San Francisco's game against Philadelphia.

"He has 10 days or more to bring back what we saw last year that we're not seeing this year," Giants manager Felipe Alou said. "We wanted him to be our regular guy, but with injuries and slumps we fell into a platoon."

First baseman Chad Santos was recalled from Fresno to replace Niekro. Santos, who has never played in the majors, was batting .263 with 12 homers and 63 RBIs for the Grizzlies.

"Yeah, it's disappointing," Niekro said. "But it's definitely something that I haven't been doing right, swing-wise. I'll get down there and fix what's going wrong and get things right."
