Inge Isn't Happy About What Fielder Addition Means For Him

Jan 27, 2012 7:20 AM EST

Last week, Brandon Inge talked happily about entering the 2012 season as Detroit's fill-time third baseman.

"I've played baseball my whole life. I've started my whole life," he said. "I'm a baseball player. I don't want to platoon."

That all changed on Thursday when the Tigers said Miguel Cabrera would shift to third base to make room for Prince Fielder at first base.

"He's not the happiest camper," manager Jim Leyland said of Inge. "He certainly understands, and we try to deal with these issues as we're supposed to because it's part of our responsibility."

Cabrera will be the full-time third baseman and will not be pulled in the late innings for a defensive replacement.

"I'll make that perfectly clear today," Leyland said. "He's not going to have the agility defensively most likely that Inge has, but you give up a little something, and you get a whole lot in return."

Leyland said he spoke to Inge, and that he regretted not being able to break the news of Fielder's signing.

"I basically apologized that this got out in the airwaves, and I'm sorry that he had to hear it other than from the horse's mouth," Leyland said. "But at that particular time, I was not at any liberty to discuss this whatsoever, so I have talked to Brandon."
