There is speculation out of the Bay Area that the Giants might not pick up the $10.5 million option on Jason Schmidt's contract, and spend $3.5 million to buy it out. He is 3-2 with a 5.69 ERA in 10 starts, and after a Cy Young caliber year in 2004, he has lost the explosiveness on his fastball and said on Sunday that he needed to ditch his power pitcher mentality. The 32-year-old says he doesn't feel any added pressure to earn the option, and is taking a nonchalant approach to his future with the club. "If it's not here, it'll be somewhere else," Schmidt said, smiling. "I'm not too worried about it. If they don't pick up the option, hey, I get a chance to possibly make more somewhere else. ... If you asked me last year, I would have said I hoped they didn't pick it up." It wouldn't be unprecedented for the Giants to decline the option and try to re-sign Schmidt at a lower salary. They retained J.T. Snow and Jason Christiansen through those means. Schmidt said it was too early for speculation, and that his main consideration was for his family's happiness wherever he is playing. "If it's not here, then hopefully we'll be happy elsewhere," he said.
