There was no concern on Saturday about the soreness that developed in disabled starter Carl Pavano's right biceps area during a start for Double-A Trenton on Friday.

Manager Joe Torre said, before the Yankees hosted the Oakland A's at Yankee Stadium, that the tightness might have been the result of Pavano using a new grip on his slider. Pitching coach Ron Guidry is teaching Pavano the new grip.

"He felt a little tightness in his arm," Torre said. "He's a little sore today, but it's just from using muscles he hasn't used. Guidry is teaching him a new grip on his slider. He's not throwing it all the time; he's getting a feel for it. And the thought is that this could be contributing to [ the soreness]."
