Twins catcher Joe Mauer is both injured and sick. Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire said before Friday night's game against the Rays that Mauer has a viral infection. The team believes the illness contributed to his body soreness. "It tells us that there's probably a reason why he's been so sore, and that's his system is fighting a viral infection," Gardenhire said. "It kind of helps us in probably knowing a little bit better where we stand and what's really going on." Mauer was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday because of leg weakness stemming from offseason arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.
