Hideki Matsui, Yankees left fielder, underwent successful surgery on Friday morning, roughly 12 hours after suffering a fractured left wrist in the first inning of Thursday's game against the Red Sox.

Matsui is expected to make a full recovery, though he will likely miss at least the next three months, if not the entire 2006 season.

"Due to this injury, I feel very sorry and, at the same time, very disappointed to have let my teammates down," Matsui said in a statement released by the team. "I will do my best to fully recover and return to the field to help my team once again."
