The players' union suggested in an e-mailed memorandum sent Friday that Major League Baseball's George Mitchell-led steroid investigation is going too far in requesting medical and phone records of "several current and former players."

The e-mail, which was obtained by Newsday, provides a window into the apparently wide-ranging investigation, which has been kept secretive until now.

It previously was assumed in some circles that Mitchell might have to rely upon testimony or even confessions in an attempt to break ground, but the memo shows to what lengths Mitchell apparently will go to ascertain the truth about baseball's past steroid problem.

Should Mitchell obtain medical records and/or testimony from trainers and doctors, that could be explosive. But with the union stepping in to protect its players and former players, that could be as unlikely as a confession. Baseball doesn't have subpoena power over its players, rendering confessions highly unlikely.
