In baseball's basic labor agreement, section 7(b)1 allows the Giants to terminate his contract if he doesn't meet the "standards of good citizenship." And Article XII of the basic agreement governs how Major League Baseball might do the same. If a federal grand jury in San Francisco returns an indictment on perjury or tax-evasion charges against Bonds, it might be enough for MLB to seek a suspension. More likely, officials will wait to see whether Bonds is convicted or pleads guilty. When commissioner Bowie Kuhn indefinitely suspended the Cubs' Fergie Jenkins in 1980 following a cocaine arrest (three months before Jenkins was convicted), an arbitrator overturned the suspension. Any action against Bonds is certain to provoke a fight from the Players Association. |
