Joe Torre made his first appearance at the New Yankee Stadium on Monday, as the Yankees dedicated a monument to the late George Steinbrenner.

Torre said he called Steinbrenner on July 3, the day before his 80th birthday, to wish him a happy birthday. Their conversation lasted a few minutes, he said, but Steinbrenner seemed to laugh when Torre mentioned how the Yankees had won two of three at Dodger Stadium in June.

Steinbrenner died a week after that phone call.
