Losing has been rather profitable for the Pirates, who have now posted a losing record in 18 consecutive seasons.

The Pirates made nearly $29.4 million in 2007 and 2008, according to team financial documents. The team's ownership also paid partners $20.4 million in 2008.

Pittsburgh gets slightly less than half of its income (about $70 million) from MLB sources -- including revenue sharing, network TV, major league merchandise sales and MLB's website.
