The Padres had been monitoring Ryan Ludwick's recovery from a calf injury and asked the Cardinals about him several times but couldn't find a match. At the same time, Padres GM Jed Hoyer had been trying to deal for Jake Westbrook after a run on Roy Oswalt went nowhere. When it became clear late last week that the Cardinals were also homing in on Westbrook, Hoyer became the chief architect who, in the words of one source, "brokered" the three-team deal that sent Westbrook to St. Louis, Ludwick to San Diego and pitching prospect Corey Kluber to Cleveland.
