In the first inning of the Washington Nationals' spring training game against the St. Louis Cardinals today, Alfonso Soriano trotted to left field, defusing a potentially combustible situation with his team. Hours before the game, it was unclear whether Soriano would even play.

On Monday, Soriano was penciled in to lead off and play left field against the Los Angeles Dodgers. But when the Nationals took the field, left field was vacant. The Nationals manager, Frank Robinson, then replaced him.
